Man killed for having food with Dalits in Uttar Pradesh

Sanjay Pandey, Lucknow, May 20, DHNS:

In a shocking incident, an old man was strangled to death allegedly by the members of his community for having food at a feast organised by a Dalit family at a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, about 225 km from here. Ironically the victim also belonged to ''kurmi'' (a backward community).

According to police sources here, 65-year-old Paras Nath Patel and his members of his family were invited by the dalit family to attend the wedding ceremony of a girl at Kuruthuwa village in the district on Wednesday last. The “kurmi” community to which Paras Nath belonged had decided not to attend the ceremony and have food with the dalits as they considered them “untouchables”.

Paras Nath, however, defied his community and his entire family had food with the dalits at the feast, which enraged the “kurmi” community of his village, sources said.

Irked over Paras Nath’s defiance, the “kurmi” community held a “panchayat” at the village on Thursday to deliberate on the matter and take action against Paras. The members of the panchayat wanted to expel Paras Nath from the community for defying the diktat.

The son of Paras, who was also present at the panchayat, alleged that the community members used expletives against Paras following which he had heated exchange of words with them.

Some members of the panchayat allegedly strangled Paras with a towel killing him on the spot. A case of murder has been registered against seven people, sources said. The culprits had been absconding.

Barely a few days ago, members of the “brahmin” community had refused to have food with dalits at a religious feast at a village in UP’s Maharajganj district.

With Athavale's support, saffrons plan to capture Dalit vote bank

PUNE: With the Athavale faction of the Republican Party of India(RPI) inching towards an electoral poll pact with BJP-Shiv Sena for civic general elections in Maharashtra, the saffron alliance hopes to penetrate into the city's Dalit vote bank dominated by the Congress and like-minded parties, including the NCP.

As a step towards formal electoral pact with BJP-Sena, RPI leader Ramdas Athavale on Thursday announced a public rally on June 9 against the Congress-NCP government. Athawale, Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde made the announcement at a joint press conference in Mumbai.

"It's a welcome move which will bring strong forces together. In Pune, both the BJP and Shiv Sena and RPI will get mutual benefits from the alliance. This alliance will ensure that the NCP-Congress rule in Pune ends and the new alliance will come to power after February 2012 civic polls," said Sham Deshpande, leader of Shiv Sena in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Supporting the sentiment, BJP's Vikas Mathkari said, "All three parties have their separate mass base and this mass base is enough to route out NCP-Congress from Pune politics. This is a positive step towards the new beginning in the state and city politics."

BJP leaders admit that the party has failed to expand its base to other communities other than the Brahmins in Pune. "It is fact that we admit candidly. Efforts are being made at all levels to purge the Brahminical face of the party and the alliance with Athavale will provide the BJP a chance to penetrate into the traditional Dalit vote bank which is manipulated by the Congress. The city BJP is also putting hard efforts to expand the Maratha vote bank. If the party succeeds to convert these efforts into votes, the BJP will emerge as the single largest party in Pune and with the support of Shiv Sena could easily get the majority number in the PMC," said a senior BJP ideologue, who requested anonymity.

Shiv Sena, on the other hand, is apprehensive about the exact political benefit to the party. "We cannot judge the benefit at this juncture. All these years, the Sena and RPI have literally locked horns in politics and on street. We will have to wait and watch the reaction of grassroots workers," said senior Sena leader from Pune.

Ramdas Athavale supporters in Pune are finding it hard to swallow the fact. "As of now, Athavaleji has announced agitation against the government. It is the public resentment that has brought all of us together and the anti-government rally is organised by the opposition parties," said RPI corporator and Athavale's supporter Siddharth Dhende.

Meanwhile, NCP and Congress leaders in Pune are worried a lot though they do not admit it on record. Especially, the Congress which banks on Dalit vote bank is forced to plan a counter strategy to keep intact its traditional vote bank. Congress leader in the PMC Aba Bagul preferred to say that his party was watching the developments closely, while NCP leaders kept mum on the development.Dalit politics stand to lose with Athavale's political ploy.

‘Will Brahmins share temple wealth with us?’

By Kancha Ilaiah
BSP has defended the inclusion of Brahmins in keeping with its larger vision of Sarva Samaj
MUMBAI: The Dalit movement today has diversified and assumed a political character. The proof of this lies in the emergence of an RPI, a DMK or a BSP. It is in this context that Mayawati has emerged as the new Dalit political icon.
There are two factors which catapulted Mayawati to an iconic status. First, she doesn’t subscribe to the average Hindu woman’s appearance. Maya, unlike her counterparts — a Sushma Swaraj or a Brinda Karat — is never seen in a sari or with a bindi. She sports short-hair, an image that Dalit women have come to love and admire. In short, she has come to symbolise the modern Ambedkarite woman.
Second, in a country where Dalits are not allowed to sit on chairs, Mayawati rules like a queen with Brahmins sitting by her feet every time she addresses a rally. In this sense, Mayawati has emerged the leader of Dalits and also of upper-castes to some extent. Though BSP members have defended the inclusion of Brahmins in keeping with their larger ideology of Sarva Samaj, the BSP-Bahujan coalition has been forged for vote-bank politics. Maya is vulnerable at this point as power does corrupt and that is why it is necessary for the media and her critics to watch her steps. A lot depends on her performance in the next five years and if the Brahmins want to be a part of this, there are certain issues that need to be addressed.
At one point, when Brahmins ruled this country as CMs and PMs, the Dalits were mere voters. Today, when there is the rise of the Dalit power in politics Brahmins want a share in it. If this is the case, an arrangement needs to be arrived at. Are Brahmins ready to give up their religious control, will Dalits be allowed to officiate in temples, will they share the Hindu gods with Dalit-Bahujans and are they ready to share the wealth generated from various temples (towards which Dalits also contribute) among the weaker sections?
Once these issues are addressed, Hinduism transforms from a spiritual fascism to a spiritual democratic religion. Brahmins will then earn the right to share the political platform.
As told to Lakshmy Ramanathan. Dr Kancha Ilaiah is the author of Why I am not a Hindu and the founder of the first Dalitbahujan journal, Nalupu. He teaches at the Osmania University, Hyderabad.

A village where dalits can't wear footwear or ride bikes

MADURAI: Villur, set in a typical agrarian backdrop with about 1,200 households was once a peaceful village that was until the dalits challenged the diktats of the upper caste' Thevars.

For dalits of Villur, about 50km from Madurai and the scene of violence on Saturday night, buying a motorcycle was a sign of extreme luxury just few years back. But only after they managed to buy one they realized that the bigger challenge was riding it down the neatly laid Kaliamman street in the village that leads to their colony.

When G Thangapandian (27), a dalit youth, decided to challenge the caste diktat that dalits should not ride motorcycles on Kaliamman street, it ended in a brutal attack on his house by a mob of over 500 persons, including women armed with broomsticks.

"If I am alive now it is because of this grill gate," pointed out G Murugan, Thangapandian's brother. The gate was damaged in several places. "The mob tried to break open the gate with boulders, but left later on Saturday night," said Murugan, fear still evident on his face.

The dalits, overwhelmed by the sheer numbers and economic status of the more influentialThevars, obeyed the diktats they did not wear footwear and they did not ride bicycles or motorcycles on Kaliamman street. "We are served tea in different tumblers and we are not entertained in the barber shops in the village," said Murugan's father Guru.

The village has been a witness to the worst forms of caste discrimination, as even schools have become a platform for such practices. "My non-dalit classmates would demand that I address them as Ayya.' If I call them by their names they would abuse me with filthy words and threaten me," said M Palani, who just completed his Plus-Two in the higher secondary school in the village.

It all started about ten years back when the family of Thangapandian, who owns a seven-acre land beside a poclain vehicle, questioned the restrictions imposed on dalits. "His family was immediately ostracized," said Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front secretary K Samuel Raj.

In fact, the ferocity of the attack by the non-dalits, when they surrounded the Villur police station when the Madurai rural superintendent of police Asra Garg was inside on Saturday night, shocked even police personnel. "I have not seen such violent mob behaviour. We managed to escape their attack only because we had fire arms," said a police official. Despite Garg opening fire in the air to disperse the mob, 12 of the total 14 people injured during the violence were police personnel. The SP's vehicle was also damaged. "We have arrested 50 persons so far and are in the lookout for 150 more," said Asra Garg. Police officials say that the caste discrimination has social, economical and political facets and needs to be dealt sensitively. "To start with we will begin with strict law enforcement," said a senior police official.

"Police see caste discrimination as a law and order problem. But it goes beyond that. A detailed study should be done on caste discrimination and untouchability in Tamil Nadu. The government should launch a campaign to spread the message that untouchability is not only an offence, but also a sin,'' said A Kathir, executive director of Evidence, a NGO.

'Beef fest' leads to tension on Eflu campus

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed on English and Foreign Languages University (Eflu) campus on Sunday following the attack a day before on dalit students of the university by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists. On Saturday, about 15 dalit students were attacked by ABVPactivists for planning to conduct a 'Beef Festival' on campus.

According to members of Dalit Adivasi Bahujan Minority Students' Association (DABMSA) and Telangana Students' Association (TSA) who jointly planned to conduct the festival from Saturday with the support of almost all student unions on campus, the ABVP activists barged into the campus kitchen and threw down the vessels in which the beef was cooked.

They also reportedly broke furniture in the mess hall and pelted stones at the college buildings. The two groups of agitated students were dispersed by Osmania University police.

On Sunday morning, the university authorities closed the men's hostel mess to prevent any untoward incident.

However, a large section of students are reportedly demanding that beef be included in the mess menu. Dalit and OBC students comprise 50 per cent of the student population at Eflu.

The dalit activists said they had taken up the issue of serving beef in the mess hall following a talk given about a month ago by Veena Satrugna, former deputy director, National Institute of Nutrition, on beef being ignored from the "traditional" Indian meal.

The students said that several discussions were held on including beef in the menu during which objections were raised on cooking and serving issues. "We had promised other students that beef would be cooked using separate vessels and would be served outside the mess hall. Our demand is that the exercise be brought under the purview of the mess committee,'' said a dalit student and member, DABMSA.

A representation signed by 60 students was submitted to the university authorities requesting that beef be part of the menu.

This is not the first time that such a festival is being conducted on the campus here. The beef fests in the past were conducted smoothly without any opposition from any student groups.

"The university cannot prevent students from conducting such a festival on campus and we are not averse to the idea of the festival and respect the sentiment behind it. The mess hall which was damaged by the students will be reopened after a few days. The university and police are investigating into the violence on campus," said Nagamallika Gudipaty, dean, School of Communication and spokesperson, Eflu.

Sathya Sai Baba's death triggers fight for his £5.5 billion empire

The death of an Indian guru who built up a worldwide following of up to 50 million people has triggered an unholy scramble for control of his £5.5 billion empire.

Sathya Sai Baba's death triggers fight for his £5.5 billion empire

Sathya Sai Baba's claims to divinity, and his apparent ability to magic holy items out of thin air were enough to win him an army of devotees, including celebrities such as GoldieHawn, Sarah Ferguson and Hard Rock cafe founder Isaac Tigrett.
India's president and prime minister both attended his latest birthday celebrations.
Their devotion was tested to the limits in recent years by persistent allegations that the guru indulged in widespread sexual abuse of young acolytes at his ashram in Puttaparthiin the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
Yet even when video footage proved beyond doubt that his "miracles" were simple sleight of hand and he was implicated in the murders of four followers, millions still refused to believe the worst.
His death on Sunday, however, is another matter. Sai Baba had built his empire on the myth that he was the reincarnation of an earlier – and much loved – Indian saint of the same name. In doing so, he had prophesied his own death at the age of 96 – and his reincarnation eight years later.
As news of his deteriorating health spread, police were ordered into Puttaparthi to maintain control, with devotees venting their anger and frustration at officials and members of the trust which runs the Sai Baba empire.
With allegations circulating that the trust had neglected Sai Baba's health in recent months, worried politicians held top-level meetings to discuss whether the state should seize control of his vast fortune.
His nephew, RJ Ratnakar and devotee Satyajit, who had taken over responsibility for his care in recent years, are among those reported to be jostling for control over the Sai organisation.
His death also raises questions about the future of his controversial education programme, which had been expanding worldwide in recent years.
In the UK his organisation has exploited the requirement for schools to provide spiritual, moral and cultural development, which was introduced in the 1988 Education Reform Act.
It promotes the lessons as a way to reverse the trend towards anti-social behaviour and the international Sathya Sai organisation says almost 200 schools across the UK have acquired its manuals.
The UK courses were written by Sai Baba follower Carole Alderman, a regular visitor to his ashram and a devout believer. She has no teaching qualification but did run the Christmas play at his ashram for six years.
Asked in an interview with the Sai radio station about the relevance of his teachings to the challenges faced by contemporary society, she replied: "I'm happy! Almost all of the time. And if I have any problems, I can just turn to Him and He'll sort them out for me."
Critics claimed the programme did little more than encourage vulnerable young people to join Sai Baba's personality cult.
With his saffron robes and trademark Afro hairstyle, Sai Baba certainly cut a distinctive, if diminutive – he stood just 5ft 2 ins tall – figure.
He was never slow to proclaim his own divinity, insisting that his arrival on earth was prophesied by Jesus, that he was the one who originally sent Jesus to Earth and that he was clearly the Lamb of God because his name – Ba Ba – is the noise a sheep makes.
He inspired devotion among his followers, who flocked to the ashram just to catch a glimpse of him and maybe to be given a sprinkling of the holy ash he claimed to be able to materialise from thin air. The lucky ones received watches or gold statues, which he would apparently produce from his mouth.
But for his growing army of critics, he was nothing short of a child-molesting fraud who had for years taken advantage of the gullibility of his young male followers to sexually abuse them during private audiences in his rooms.
Victims have told in harrowing detail how they were groped during private audiences and required to take part in sexual acts with the man they had trusted.
So seriously were the claims taken that for many years the US government warned its citizens to stay away from the ashram because of the risk and UNESCO, the UN's Educational, Social, and Cultural Organisation, pulled out of a conference at the ashram citing deep concerns about "widely-reported allegations of sexual abuse".
Sai Baba had dismissed the sex abuse allegations as false and described them as the "cawing of crows".
"All that is written on walls [or] said in political meetings, or the vulgar tales carried by the print media, should not carry one away."
But former devotee Barry Pittard said Sai Baba was a dangerous confidence trickster who should have been allowed to have anything to do with children.
"For the worst victims of his depredations, the victims of murder and maiming and people being beaten by his officers and families being broken up and the boys, some of them very young, their sufferings have been very great."
And former Sai organisation teacher Robert Priddy, who helped set up the teacher training model, said most people teaching the programme were unqualified to do so.
"The aim of embedding 'spiritual' values in children was heavily imprinted with indoctrinating them to believe in Sai Baba's divinity and doctrine," he warned.
Sai Baba had also been denounced by the Indian Rationalists Association, who debunked his "miracles" and pointed to numerous videos available on the internet which show the one-time conjurer producing items from various places where he has concealed them, including his mop of hair.
The negative publicity had little effect on the growth of his fortune, though. Court documents allege he owned two Mercedes limousines, two BMWs, one Daimler, one Jaguar, and plenty of other Indian vehicles.
The documents also allege he had the roof of his temple lined with solid gold. The grounds of his ashram contain a museum, mostly dedicated to his own works and there are numerous statues, including a slightly larger than life gold statue of Sai Baba himself, a gold chariot, a silver chariot and a cricket pitch laid for an international tournament for which he offered as a trophy a solid gold cup weighing 20kg and valued at £150,000.
The battle for control over that fortune promises to be bitter. Family members have already fired the first shots at the trust, and there are suspicions the state government would like to get its hands on the coffers.
Despite Sai Baba having previously assured his followers that he would not die anytime soon, his physical health deteriorated rapidly in recent months.
He was admitted to his own hospital at the end of last month suffering from pneumonia and breathing problems. On Thursday, his condition worsened and doctors said his organs were no longer functioning. He died on Sunday, reportedly of heart failure. His exact age is a matter of debate: his own organisation put his age at 85, while his purported date of birth in 1926 would suggest he was 84. Others suggest he was born in 1929.
Narendra Nayak, President of Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, said that his failure to reach the age at which he had claimed he would die should be enough to convince people Sai Baba was no God.
Speaking before the guru's death he said: "Sai Baba is a third rate prestidigitator and manipulator who is now paralysed and he cannot cure himself. How can he cure others? There is a saying in English – physician heal thyself. So I would say Baba heal yourself."

Three held for ''cleansing'' retired dalit officer''s room

PTI | 02:04 PM,Apr 21,2011

Ramakrishnan has approached the Human Rights Commission seeking a probe into the matter. A Junior Superintendent at sub-registrar office, an Upper Division clerk at the Registration IG's office and a class four staff have been arrested in this connection, police said today. The three employees were not in good terms with Ramakrishnan and their action was due to personal enmity, they added. Ramakrishnan in his petition had stated that the 'cleansing' was performed as he belonged to an SC community and it amounted to violation of his human rights and civil liberties. Meanwhile, the government has decided to appoint V K Balakrishnan as Registration IG in place of the person who was holding charge of the post now.

Mangalore: Arya Samaj's Bold Initiative to Break Class Barriers

Pics by Suresh Vamanjoor

Mangalore, Apr 5: Arya Samaj unit in the city has now taken a bold step to bring all classes of the Hindu faith together.

As reported already, on the occasion of Ugadi on Monday, it held rituals like Gayatri hawan (yajna) at the hands of Dalits in the locality of Kudkorigudda in Kankanady here. The message given was that the Dalits were not untouchables, with a view to bringing them to the mainstream of the society.

Under the guidance of Praveen Valke of the Arya Samaj, Dalits themselves recited the mantras and shlokas. Sri Esha Vithaldasa Swamiji of Kemaru was the main speaker. He said that untouchability was the greatest bane of the society. Events of this kind would always banish the inequalities in the society and bring about world welfare, he said.

The Swamiji said that caste untouchability was virtually a type of internal terrorism in the country. The word 'Shudra' should be first banished from the society. Then only class discrimination could be eliminated. The Hindu faith has grown because of the dedication of the backward classes. It has kept growing stronger because of them, he said.

Speaking further, he said in reality those who are corrupt, those who loot others, those addicted to vices and the kind are the ones to be called and treated as untouchables and not on the basis of caste. In future further rituals would be conducted often at the hands of Dalits themselves.

Bangalore: Massive rally against cow slaughter Bill held

Bangalore, 28 June 2010: Karnataka's leading intellectuals and writers, including Prof U R Ananthmurthy and Girish Karnad, have come down heavily on the state government over the proposed anti-cow slaughter Bill and threatened of a sate-wide agitation against if the ''anti-poor, anti-farmer and anti-democratic'' legislation was not revoked.
The Jnanapeetha Award winning writers joined a host of other luminaries in lending their support against the ''ill-motivated'' Bill at a mass public rally held at Shivaji Nagar, in Bangalore on Monday.
Launching a scathing attack on the BJP government Prof Ananthmurthy said the Bill was communally motivated and brought to the floor of the Houses in order to make criminals out of ordinary Christians and Muslims.
Dumping a copy of the proposed bill in the dustbin to mark his protest, he said that people who eat beef too have humanity unlike members in the BJP led state government who are planning to cut down the staple diet of community. ''The farmers would face difficulties in taking care of cattle after they stop milking. If the bill is implemented such cattle would have no takers and it would cause a great imbalance,'' he said.
Insisting that the proposed Bill was not only detrimental to Muslims, Prof Ananthamurthy said the lives of ordinary farmers will also be hugely affected by the move and they will be frightened to take up the rearing of cattle, leading to shortage of milk.
Expressing concern that the move would spark caste struggle, he said, cutting across religious lines people should oppose the Bill which was an interferance in the dietary habits of crores of people.
Mr Karnad said the BJP government was operating with Hindutva agenda and backward and minority communities are in danger at this point of time. The BJP is not talking about protecting cattle out of compassion but it is rather part of a hidden agenda, he said.
JDS spokesman and MLC YSV Dattha said his party would not allow tabling of the Bill in the Upper House, although it has secured the nod of the Lower House.
Raitha Sangha president KS Puttannaiah ridiculed the government saying, the farmers in the state will have to tie their cattle inside Vidhana Saudha if the anti-cow slaughter Act comes into force.
Samatha Sainik Dal chief M Venkataswami dared the government to implement the Act and warned the chief minister that the Dalits, backward castes, Muslims, Christians, farmers and writers have forged a unified front against the draconian measure.
Voicing his concern over the proposed Act, Devanooru Mahadeva, Dalit leader and writer, urged the Governor to send the copy of the Bill to the President of India seeking her intervention.
Former MLA and the president of Anti slaughter movement AK Subbaiah presided over the meeting, which was attended by people from all walks of life and representatives of various pro-people organisations. including Samatha Sainika Dal and Karnataka Komu Soharda Vedike.
Those who addressed the meeting warned the state government of carrying out a massive agitation throughout the state, if the bill was not withdrawn.
Former Union minnister CK Jaffer Sharief, Mangalore MLA UT Khader, MLCs Naseer Ahmed and Abdul Azeem, farmer leader Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, journalist Gauri Lankesh, former minister BT Lalitha Naik, former MLA Srirama Reddy, left party leaders Gurushanth and Siddanagowda Patil, writers Prof Rahmath Tarikere, KR Nagaraj, Fakir Mohammed Katpady, Pattabhirama Somayaji, Induhdar Honnapur, Bhanu Mushthak, Allamaprabhu Bettadur, Dr Mogalli Ganesh, Dr. L Hanumanthaiah, Dr Banjagere Jayaprakash, SDPI president Abdul Majeed, PFI state president Ilyas Thumbe, DSS leaders Mavalli Shankar, Mohan Raj, activists Patapat Nagaraj, Karnataka Muslim Muthahida Mahaz state secretary SM Iqbal, Beef Merchants Association state president Khasim Aijaz Khureshi, human rights activist Kalkuli Vittala Hegde, Mangalore beef merchants association chief Ali Hassan, among others, were present on the dais.
