‘Vedic practices have made inroads into ‘bhoota' worship'
Sudipto Mondal
Nature worship is considered to be the cog of Dalit spirituality |
‘Landowning castes used bhootas to assert their ownership over factors of production'
‘Bhootasthanas are being renovated to resemble Hindu temples'
MANGALORE: In his book “Why I am not a Hindu”, Hyderabad-based Dalit historian Kancha Ilaiah talks at length about the localised and non-Vedic nature of Dalit and OBC religious practices.
He stresses that deified local heroes and nature worship form the central cog of Dalit worship and sets it apart from the centralised structure of Brahminic Hinduism that revolves around the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Indeed, he argues, Dalits and OBCs practise a completely different religion, which was later assimilated into Hinduism for political reasons.
Whether hero, spirit and nature worship exists within Hinduism or outside is a matter of much contention, with intellectual heavyweights such as Romila Thapar arguing against Mr. Ilaiah's conception. But there seems to be no quarrel over the fact that ‘bhoota' or ‘daiva' worship, practised across Tulu Nadu, is a non-Vedic, if not non-Hindu, practice. Tulu historian and author Amruth Someshwar says that bhoota worship is the very soul of Tuluva culture and it forms the basis of all socio-cultural and economic relations between the people here.
He makes common cause with Mr. Ilaiah's observation that it is a practice followed by the traditionally oppressed classes in this region.
But Tuluva culture, according to Mr. Someshwar, which was conceived and practised thousands of years ago by the original inhabitants of this land, has seen several waves of “political invasion”. The first to exploit the bhootas were the feudal and landowning castes in the region such as the Bunts, Billavas, and even the Jains, he says. “These castes used the bhootas to assert their ownership over factors of production such as land.” The second wave of assimilation happened when Brahminical forces saw bhoota worship as a threat to the Vedic system. In the past 30 years alone, Vedic practices such as the performance of ‘Sudarshana Homa' and ‘Chandika Yaga' have made inroads into bhoota worship, he says.“The architecture of bhootasthanas is changing and they are being renovated to resemble Hindu temples,” he says.

Provide Social and economical status to Dalits: MLC D.S. Veeraiah
Pointing out the fact that funds earmarked for the uplift of the SC/ST communities are either being diverted or unused, he said that the government has provided reservation facilities only for employees and not for the rest of the community. He urged the government to provide self-employment loans so that Dalits can enjoy economic equality.
Stating that the state has allotted 430 crore for Dalit development and that the BBMP has provided 10,000 houses to homeless Dalits, he urged the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) to identify homeless people and provide houses for them.
He said that Dalit leaders will organize a training camp for Dalit leaders under the guidance of the Karnataka Dalitha Pragathipara Sangatanegala Okkuta. The focus of the camp is to create awareness regarding reservation and its implementation through a wide range of programmes. The organizers expect 300 Dalit leaders to participate in the event.
Dalit leaders Keshava, Sajeeva Neriya, A. G. Vivekananda, and Venkatesh were also present on the occasion.

Mangalore: Arya Samaj's Bold Initiative to Break Class Barriers
Pics by Suresh Vamanjoor
Mangalore, Apr 5: Arya Samaj unit in the city has now taken a bold step to bring all classes of the Hindu faith together.
As reported already, on the occasion of Ugadi on Monday, it held rituals like Gayatri hawan (yajna) at the hands of Dalits in the locality of Kudkorigudda in Kankanady here. The message given was that the Dalits were not untouchables, with a view to bringing them to the mainstream of the society.
Under the guidance of Praveen Valke of the Arya Samaj, Dalits themselves recited the mantras and shlokas. Sri Esha Vithaldasa Swamiji of Kemaru was the main speaker. He said that untouchability was the greatest bane of the society. Events of this kind would always banish the inequalities in the society and bring about world welfare, he said.
The Swamiji said that caste untouchability was virtually a type of internal terrorism in the country. The word 'Shudra' should be first banished from the society. Then only class discrimination could be eliminated. The Hindu faith has grown because of the dedication of the backward classes. It has kept growing stronger because of them, he said.
Speaking further, he said in reality those who are corrupt, those who loot others, those addicted to vices and the kind are the ones to be called and treated as untouchables and not on the basis of caste. In future further rituals would be conducted often at the hands of Dalits themselves.

29 children rescued from illegal confinement
All the children including one girl identified as Chandana (11) were from different places of the State, including Tumkur, Halebid, Hassan and Chikmagalur. Seven of them were also from Patna in Bihar. All of them were brought to the hostel last Saturday after a raid carried out by a team led by Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Asha Nayak on a “congested” hall in Pakshikere near Haleyangady.
Asha Nayak claimed that the children along with around ten other people, including the family which looked after the children were kept in a hall, measuring around 250 sq. ft., which had only one bathroom and a toilet for all of them.
Nayak had said that while interrogating the man in charge of the so-called hostel, he said that they were brought here for education. When asked for documents showing parental consent for allowing the children to be under his care, or financial records, the man claimed that they were with the chartered accountant, she added.
On Tuesday, the department had asked the parents of all the children to be present at the remand home but did not hand over the children to them as they did not bring relevant documents to prove that they are indeed the parents.
Asha Nayak alleged that the Christian Guru K J Joy, his wife Elizabeth, and their children Joel and Jobi had kept the 29 children under illegal confinement. She claimed that the children were also being forced to convert their religion. Asha Nayaka asserted that Chandana had complained about Joy molesting her, which provoked the locals, who thrashed him. Later police took him into custody for interrogation.
However while confronting the media on Wednesday, the eleven year old girl changed her statement and asserted that she was neither molested nor was ill treated by Joy. She added that she was compelled to say such things against Joy.
Christian Federation of India, Dalita Sangharsha Samiti and KMN staged a demonstration for over an hour condemning the raid and demanding justice to Joy. A leader of Christian Federation of India, Prashant Jattan averred that the incident was a conspiracy against committed social workers. He stated that the girl has disclosed the truth and Joy has been proven innocent. DSS leader Keshav was also present.
K J Joy refused the allegations against him and his family and said that he was running just a children's hostel for children below the age of 15, so that he could provide them with education. He also claimed that he received financial support for the cause from foreign countries. However, he couldn't produce any documents to support his claims.
