Sullia: Subrahmanya Bandh on Made Snana a Huge Success

Sullia: Subrahmanya Bandh on Made Snana a Huge Success
Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (SP)
Sullia, Dec 6: The call for Subrahmanya bandh, given by devotees of Lord Subrahmanyeshwara Temple in protest against what they call as outside interferences in the affairs of the temple, efforts to meddle with sanctity and customs of the temple etc on Monday December 5 evoked total response.
Thousands of devotees, local people and students, who participated in the protest meeting organized on the occasion, placed a rightful demand for the continuance of the Made Made Snana ritual, which people perform in conformity with their religious vow as a gesture of gratitude to the Lord for favours granted, particularly curing skin-related diseases.
Veteran astrologer, Vidwan Kabyady Jayaram Acharya, delivering the main address at the meeting, criticized the leftists and so called intellectuals for poking their noses into unnecessary affairs, and termed them as remnants of the British administration era.
“A well-planned conspiracy to create a rift among the Hindu community has been hatched. People belonging to Malekudiya community, who enjoy a special status in the history and functioning of the temple, have always been staunch devotees of the Lord. They are backed by pure devotion towards the temple deity, and no one should try to incense them on this issue. Made Made Snana has not given rise to any problem to anyone. We at Subrahmanya have not found any adversity in this custom. How could people living far away have noticed them? Thousands of people have joined here to support the sanctity of the temple voluntarily. Made Made Snana is performed by devotees at their will and free of cost. Let the concerned conduct scientific tests and prove that it is harmful, before banning it. No one should test the tolerance levels of Hindus. This malicious propaganda appears to be aimed to stopping the exodus of devotees which the temple has been witnessing since the last many years,” he said.
Acharya called upon Hindus to work as a united force to protest against wrongs their religious centres may be compelled to endure. He said he had been brought to Subrahmanya  by his grandmother when he was 16, to seek the Lord’s blessings to cure the red blisters that had appeared on his body. He said he performed Made Made Snana and his ailment was cured, never to appear again till now.
Lakshmissha Gabladka also asked the people not to allow their faiths and beliefs to get dented by efforts being made by unconnected people. He advised the officials coming to the temple to study the history, belief systems, and faith of the people, before meddling with its affairs.
Sullia Block Congress president, Venkappa Gowda, expressed the opinion that orders which interfere with longstanding religious faiths of the devotees should never be issued.
A number of people including leaders from Dalit and Malekudiya communities participated, and supported the continuance of Made Made Snana ritual in the temple. Rajesh N S welcomed. Harish Injady proposed vote of thanks. Satish Koojugodu presented the programme.

Vedike to protest against ‘made snana' today

Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike on Friday urged the Government to issue an Ordinance banning “made snana” in some temples in the State.
Vedike convener K. L. Ashok told presspersons here that the ritual was in vogue in temples at Kukke Subrahmanya, Udupi, Perdoor, and Belman in the coastal belt. He said it was a superstitious belief that ‘made snana' cured skin ailments. Among those who practised the ritual, Brahmins were in less number and a majority of them were Dalit and “Shudra” . The ritual was a conspiracy by “Purohitashahi” sections of society to ensure that lower sections of society remained slaves to them. Mr. Ashok said its practise, was against the principles of the Constitution. Mr. Ashok said the vedike would stage a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday at 4 p.m. .

Dalit groups demand ban on the ritual

Staff Correspondent
The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (B. Krishnappa), the Samata Sainik Dal (SSD), and the Bahujan Samaj Party staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding a ban on made snana at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and other temples in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
Samata Sainik Dal district unit president Vishwanath Petri said that it was a travesty that after 65 years of Independence people belonging to Dalit, Backward Classes and Minorities were still suffering at the hands of the Government and the priestly class.
Nothing illustrated this better than made snana where people belonging to weaker sections rolled on plantain leaves in which Brahmins had finished their meals.
What was even worse was that the practice was prevailing in the native districts of Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya. In a memorandum submitted at the Deputy Commissioner's office following Saturday's dharna, DSS district unit president Ramesh Kotian said “made snana” was inhuman and unscientific and hence it should be abolished by the State Government.
The Kukke Subrahmanya Math swamiji, who had reportedly said that “made snana” was a question of faith or belief and should not be opposed, should be arrested under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya, who was supporting “made snana”, should be dropped from the State Cabinet. Deputy Superintendent of Police Nagaraj who mistreated Mr. Shivaramu at the Kukke Subrahmanya police station should be dismissed from service and legal action initiated against him.

How Sangh Parivar benefitted from Yeddyurappa's land largesse

RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale may have declared that scam-tainted former chief minister of Karnataka, B. S. Yeddyurappa, is an embarrassment to the BJP because of his involvement in various land scams. But the RSS was among the major beneficiaries of Yeddy's land largesse.
The state government allotted prime commercial lands and residential plots valued at around Rs. 50 crore at throw away prices to as many as six RSS- affiliated organisations and seven leaders from the RSS background whereas more than 3,50,000 people have been waiting patiently for allotment of a plot developed by government agencies. No wonder, the state RSS unit leaders are rallying behind the jailed-Yeddyurappa as a thanks-giving service for his magnanimity.
Jana Seva Vidya Kendra school
The Jana Seva Vidya Kendra school was given 10 acres of land, worth over Rs15 crore.
The RSS-backed organisations, which have been allotted land on a preferential basis by the government through Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Greater Bangalore City Corporation (GBCC), include Rashtrotthana Parishath, Jana Seva Vidya Kendra, Samskara Bharathi, Hindu Jagaran Vedike, Mahila Dakshata Samithi and Anantha Shishu Nivasa. Each of these organisations pays nominal rents ranging between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh per annum to the government whereas the property in their possession runs into crores of rupees.
Calls to RSS spokespersons, seeking clarification over the issue, were not returned. BJP's Karnataka unit chief K.S. Eshwarappa said he was not aware of the matter. "I need to ascertain the facts before making a comment. I am busy with other commitments. I don't know about any such allotments,"he said.
Though there is no illegality in allotting prime land to these organisations, the government is not fully realising the commercial value of the land, as they pay only a pittance for using the land on a long-term basis. It results in loss to the exchequer.
"Had the government auctioned the land or collected rent on par with the prevailing market rates from these organisations, it would have mobilised resources for development works," Janata Dal (Secular) spokesperson Y. S. V. Dutta said.
Ironically, applications of several other organisations, including those promoting art, culture and sports, for allotment of subsidised land in the city, are pending approval. "Hundreds of government offices are functioning out of rented premises in Bangalore. Instead of leasing out land to the RSS, the government could have constructed office buildings on the same and save money," Dutta said. Rashtrotthana Parishath is the biggest beneficiary of Yeddyurappa's allegiance to the Sangh. It got a 906.2 square meters of a civic amenity (CA) site in the upmarket Sadashivanagar for a pittance to run a health care centre. CA sites are allotted only for a specific period (ranging between 10-30 years) but rarely does the BDA recovers such sites, as they get their lease extended easily.
Real estate prices are one of the highest in Sadashivanagar. The market value of the land allotted to the Parishath is least Rs. 13 crore. The Bangalore Development Authority BDA) had leased the land to the Sangh outfit.
The second biggest beneficiary Yeddyurappa's benevolence is the Jana Seva Vidya Kendra, which got over 10 acres of land expand the campus of a Kendra- run residential school. It situated in Channenahalli on the outskirts of Bangalore.
The previous government had acquired the land from the farmers to construct a housing project for the poor. But the Yeddyurappa government arm- twisted the allottees to surrender their land and it was then transferred to the Vidya Kendra. The market value of the property is over Rs. 15 crore,"H. C. Balakrishna, local JD( S) legislator said.
Balakrishna said the villagers have moved court, which has set up a committee to examine the case.
Samskara Bharthi and Hindu Jagaran Vedike - key-affiliates of the RSS - have each been allotted 2,000 sq ft of land at different locations in Bangalore.  The combined value of the land allotted to both the organisations on a long-term lease basis is over Rs. 5 crore.
Also, the Anatha Shishu Nivasa got 3,585 sq mt of land in Poornapragna House Building Cooperative Society and the Mahila Dakshaka Samithi 396 sq mt in Vidyaranyapura. The combined market value of both the properties is nearly Rs. 5 crore.
Yeddyurappa set aside rules to allot land to RSS outfits. They were given residential plots under the 'G' category - which is reserved for achievers in the fields of sports, culture, arts and social service. Plots under this category are priced at between Rs. 6-12 lakh. Apart from Sangh outfits, RSS leaders also benefited from Yeddy's land largesse. They include those from the Sangh- backed labour union, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, local leaders (Pracharak), writers for RSS' publications and BJP leaders who are close to the Sangh.
"The preferential allotment of residential plots and CA sites to RSS organisations and leaders is in clear violation of the BDA rules. What is their contribution to society? How will the government justify the allotment? Now, people will know why the BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders have not initiated any action against Yeddyurappa, who is behind the bars for murky land deals," state Congress spokesperson V. S. Ugrappa said.
Ugrappa claimed that the state organic farming mission is headed by hardcore RSS leader, A. S. Anand. "Is anybody monitoring what is happening with the mission or its objectives? The BJP government has been too generous with its political masters," he said.
Whenever Yeddyurappa was asked to quit earlier this year in view of the land scam allegations, he held out a "threat" to "expose" senior BJP leaders, who took favours from him.
Clearly, Yeddyurappa knows how to please his bosses both in the party as well as his alma mater, the RSS.

Karnataka to Enforce Cow Slaughter Ban

Bangalore, Feb 10 (IANS) : The Karnataka government will enforce a ban on cow slaughter strictly by amending a 1964 act to prohibit the sale and consumption of beef, Home Minister V.S. Acharya said Wednesday.

“An amending bill will be introduced in the coming budget session to make cow slaughter, sale of cows and consumption of beef a cognizable offence under a new law,” Acharya told reporters after a cabinet meeting here.
The amending bill will replace the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Prevention Act, 1964. According to section four of the proposed bill, no person shall slaughter or intentionally kill any cattle. The definition of cattle in the bill includes cow, calf, bull, bullock, and buffalo. Section five of the proposed bill prohibits sale, use and possession of beef.
The cabinet also decided to enhance punishment with seven years imprisonment and a penalty of Rs.100,000 for serious offences against cows.
“The minimum punishment will be one year imprisonment and a fine up to Rs.50,000 for smaller crimes against the domestic animal,” Acharya said.
The month-long budget session will commence Feb 25 with an address by state governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj to the joint legislature and the state budget will be presented March 5.
In a related development, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) protested against the cow slaughter ban and criticised the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state for hurting the sentiments of Dalits, Muslims and backward classes with an anti-retrograde measure.
“Each individual is entitled to his/her own food habits. The government has no right to force people to not consume a particular food,” BSP vice-president N. Mahesh said.

Intellectuals to campaign against superstition

Members slam political leaders for promoting blind beliefs
Intellectuals to campaign against superstition
Mysore, March 19, DHNS:

As superstition, blind belief and black magic make an entry into political arena, a forum of intellectuals from the city have come together to fight against such beliefs.

In a meeting held at Jaladarshini guest house here on Saturday, intellectuals and writers like Prof K S Bhagawan, Prof Hi Shi Ramachandra Gowda, Prof Shivaramu Kadanakuppe, Prof V N Laxminarayana and progressive thinkers Janamana Krishna and others took a dig at the growing influence of black magic and superstition.

They blamed the political leaders, including the government for giving importance to blind beliefs citing Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s statements on alleged black magic against him. Several regional television channels are also responsible for the present scenario, they opined.

Writer Joganahalli Gurumurthy, convener of the intellectuals meet against superstition said the meeting decided to start a big campaign against shedding belief in black magic and superstition.

He said the intellectuals and progressive thinkers from city would strengthen campaign against these beliefs from the hobli and taluk levels. A meeting of like-minded people from these centres would be convened on the first Sunday of April to chalk out the campaign programme, he said .

During the meeting, the participants expressed concern at the increasing communal and religious thoughts and black magic and superstition since the BJP came to power in the state.

Mayawati Answers to BJP Allegations

Mayawati Answers to BJP Allegations
Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Mayawati has requested that Dalits should be included in the Lokpal Bill committee. The demand was rejected by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad who said that the BSP had a lot to answer to before making requests.
Shankar Prasad called the BSP government anti-Dalit because it has not made any major changes to Dalit welfare in Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, he said that the state’s government failed to find the murderer of Health Official, B P Singh even 3 weeks after his death on April 2.
The BSP defended itself saying that it reduced crime against women in UP to 11.9% while Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh still reported figures as high as 13.9% and 22.3%, respectively. Mayawati said that her government had filled category posts that lay vacant in the state for years, recruited 20,000 Dalit-caste members as teachers as well as created over 100,000 new jobs for sweepers. Mayawati added that her party remained the only one that took swift action against members that were accused in criminal cases.
The BSP rejected all allegations according to which its government in UP was falling apart and told the BJP to monitor the performance of its own state governments more closely.

Bangalore: Massive rally against cow slaughter Bill held

Bangalore, 28 June 2010: Karnataka's leading intellectuals and writers, including Prof U R Ananthmurthy and Girish Karnad, have come down heavily on the state government over the proposed anti-cow slaughter Bill and threatened of a sate-wide agitation against if the ''anti-poor, anti-farmer and anti-democratic'' legislation was not revoked.
The Jnanapeetha Award winning writers joined a host of other luminaries in lending their support against the ''ill-motivated'' Bill at a mass public rally held at Shivaji Nagar, in Bangalore on Monday.
Launching a scathing attack on the BJP government Prof Ananthmurthy said the Bill was communally motivated and brought to the floor of the Houses in order to make criminals out of ordinary Christians and Muslims.
Dumping a copy of the proposed bill in the dustbin to mark his protest, he said that people who eat beef too have humanity unlike members in the BJP led state government who are planning to cut down the staple diet of community. ''The farmers would face difficulties in taking care of cattle after they stop milking. If the bill is implemented such cattle would have no takers and it would cause a great imbalance,'' he said.
Insisting that the proposed Bill was not only detrimental to Muslims, Prof Ananthamurthy said the lives of ordinary farmers will also be hugely affected by the move and they will be frightened to take up the rearing of cattle, leading to shortage of milk.
Expressing concern that the move would spark caste struggle, he said, cutting across religious lines people should oppose the Bill which was an interferance in the dietary habits of crores of people.
Mr Karnad said the BJP government was operating with Hindutva agenda and backward and minority communities are in danger at this point of time. The BJP is not talking about protecting cattle out of compassion but it is rather part of a hidden agenda, he said.
JDS spokesman and MLC YSV Dattha said his party would not allow tabling of the Bill in the Upper House, although it has secured the nod of the Lower House.
Raitha Sangha president KS Puttannaiah ridiculed the government saying, the farmers in the state will have to tie their cattle inside Vidhana Saudha if the anti-cow slaughter Act comes into force.
Samatha Sainik Dal chief M Venkataswami dared the government to implement the Act and warned the chief minister that the Dalits, backward castes, Muslims, Christians, farmers and writers have forged a unified front against the draconian measure.
Voicing his concern over the proposed Act, Devanooru Mahadeva, Dalit leader and writer, urged the Governor to send the copy of the Bill to the President of India seeking her intervention.
Former MLA and the president of Anti slaughter movement AK Subbaiah presided over the meeting, which was attended by people from all walks of life and representatives of various pro-people organisations. including Samatha Sainika Dal and Karnataka Komu Soharda Vedike.
Those who addressed the meeting warned the state government of carrying out a massive agitation throughout the state, if the bill was not withdrawn.
